Thorbjörn Bechmann & Maria Wandel

June 7 -- October 18, 2026

This exhibition brings together the work of Maria Wandel and Thorbjørn Bechmann in an exploration of how different artistic languages can mirror, displace and put each other into perspective.

Thorbjørn Bechmann unfolds his contribution through an installation consisting of a mobile, a steel grid and paintings. The kinetic elements establish an immediate sense of structure and order, yet they are activated in their encounter with the body and the space. Movement, both actual and perceived, unsettles what is stable and points to the temporary nature of the constructions.

The paintings act as active surfaces within this context. They appear as sensuous, material-based fields in which gesture and layer upon layer of working create a tension between control and dissolution. Something seems constantly on the verge of emerging without ever being fully articulated, and the pictures sustain a restrained intensity that both absorbs and resists the spatial forces around them.

The two practices are each given a gallery of their own, and this very division becomes an active strategy: the works do not meet directly but set up an ongoing interplay of perspectives, in which the experience of one room shifts the reading of the other. It is in the space between the rooms that the form of the exhibition emerges. Wandel’s hang works with accumulation and inner movement, while Bechmann’s installation organises relationships between objects, surfaces and the body. The two practices do not explain each other; rather, they sharpen each other’s conditions.

For the viewer, the exhibition becomes a passage rather than a unified whole. The body moves between two situations, and understanding arises in the transitions. Movement is not only something the works contain but something that emerges in the perspectives they open onto each other.

Rather than merging the two practices into a single narrative, the exhibition leaves their differences open. It is in this interplay of perspectives that something comes into being: a field where structure and sensuousness, control and dissolution coexist as mutually displacing forces.
