Simon Kubik, born 1998 in Vienna, is a painter and conceptual artist working and living in Vienna, Austria. His work ranges from figurative, semi-abstract oil paintings to installations and sculptures with ready-made aesthetics. Kubik studied Transmedia Art at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, and has shown his work in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Rome, Seoul, San Francisco, Vienna, Vilnius, Salzburg, Athens, Busan, and Berlin.
At the heart of his painting practice is a question about how we actually see. Rather than treating an image as something we simply perceive, his work explores the idea that we register shapes and intensities of light in relation to one another, a kind of reduced impressionism. Each painting becomes an experiment in finding the most honest amount of paint needed to capture that experience, no more and no less.
The pictures were taken during his participation in the Artist-in-Residence program of the Kunstraum Sankt Virgil in Salzburg.
